How to figure out gematria

Gematria, sometimes referred to as gematrical numerology, is an ancient system of assigning numerical values to letters, words, phrases and names. It has been used in ancient civilizations including Egypt, Babylon and Greece. Gematria is believed to have originated from the Hebrew alphabet and its numerological component, but it has also been used in other cultures such as Greek and Latin cultures. The purpose of understanding gematria is to strengthen within the spiritual practice; it is a way of understanding how energy moves through language, numbers and symbols.

In many cultures, numbers were believed to be powerful symbols that could unlock deeper spiritual understanding. In Judaism for example, it was believed that the numerical value of words could unlock different levels or interpretations within them. By deciphering the numerological codes embedded in these words one could connect with the deeper energies behind them. This type of formuation was often linked to biblical texts as it was said that all letters of Heaven had numeric value to them which enabled man to create a mystical key that opened up mysterious gateways into unknown truths.

The most basic way of understanding Gematria is by converting letters into numerical values. Each letter represents a number in what is known as the 'Corresponding Numerical Code': A= 1 B= 2 C= 3 D= 4… all the way up to Z= 26 (some systems can go beyond Z). Words then are comprised of several letters which then become their sum when converted into their corresponding number code values. An example would be if we took the word 'SHALOM' (peace): S=19 H=8 A=1 L=12 O=15 M =13 -- 19+8+1+12+15+13 = 68. Through this example we know then that SHALOM equates to 68 using gematria's corresponding numerical code system when added together.

Once you understand how each letter is assigned a numerical value and how those values equate to a whole word, you can begin deciphering deeper meanings behind words such as 'Peace' or 'Love' - words with great spiritual significance when broken down through code and numeric conversion in Gematria.
